Barefeet

Barefeet

I, like so many people struggle to get to sleep and stay asleep. At times it’s so bad that I start to feel anxious when it gets close to bedtime, knowing that I might be lying in bed staring at the ceiling for hours, while my partner lay beside me, snoring and sleeping like a baby. One of a few moments in my life that I experience pure loathing and jealousy.

However I’m feeling both more rested and less jealous these days, since one of my clients introduced me to the phenomenon of Earthing. “What is Earthing you say?” Well I’m so glad you asked! Here goes…

Earthing

Earthing, or Grounding as it’s often called, is connecting your bare feet with the earth. Any part of our body is a good conductor to connecting to the earth, but our feet are especially good conductors because the kidney reflex on the plantar side of the foot connects to all zones of the body, thus connecting every part of our bodies to the earth. Becoming one with the earth not only lifts our spirits, it can also improve our health.

Get Some Zzzz’s

I speak from first hand experience that Earthing helps me to fall asleep faster and has improved the quality of my sleep. However some stats never hurt!  According to a research field study conducted on grounded sleepers, “85 percent of the grounded sleepers fell asleep sooner; 93 percent slept better; 100 percent were more rested upon waking.” Participants also noticed a significant reduction in muscle stiffness and back and joint pain. I think most of us would appreciate more sleep and less aches and pains!

Inflammation

free radicalsIt is becoming well known that chronic inflammation is the cause for many diseases. According to Dr. James Oschman, an expert in Energy Medicine, Grounding transfers free electrons from the earth into our bodies. These free electrons are the most powerful antioxidants that have been found as of yet.

Inflammation is actually a lack of electrons in the body. “Grounding research has discovered that if you place your feet on the ground after an injury electrons will migrate into your body and spread through your tissues. Any free radicals that leak into the healthy tissue will immediately be electrically neutralized. This occurs because the electrons are negative, while the free radicals are positive, so they cancel each other out.” Along with reduced levels of inflammation in the body, Grounding research has shown beneficial changes in heart rate and decreased skin resistance.

Earthing in a Pinch

Obviously, walking barefoot outside is the easiest and best way to connect with the earth. However, when it’s below zero or you’re stuck in a building all day it becomes a bit hard to accomplish. Our fast paced lives and inclement weather are not always conducive to getting our daily dose of earth.

Luckily, there is an option for those of us who battle our schedule and the elements. Earthing mats, bracelets and patches can be purchased at  www.earthing.com. If you are in the Lansing area, bracelets and patches can be purchased at Salon De Lourdes in Okemos, MI. I use the bracelet, which I put on every night before I go to sleep.

I’m so thankful I was introduced to Earthing. It is now a rare moment that I don’t sleep sound. I feel better and I’m nicer, which I’m sure my family appreciates.

It’s getting warm, take a moment to walk in the grass and soak up the sunshine!
